Built on a craggy offshore rock in 1859, Godrevy is one of Britain’s best loved lighthouses. Its beam reaches out over St Ives Bay, Cornwall, warning ships of a treacherous reef. It has figured in paintings by artists based in St Ives since the 1880s and was the inspiration for Virginia Woolf’s 'To The Lighthouse', using memories from her childhood holidays in the area.

The introductory essay by Jessica Mann and Charles Thomas describes Godrevy's history and its place in literature and art.
